Helen A. Dixon, 92, of Independence, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Regal Estate in Independence.
Helen was born July 14, 1918 in Sedan, Kansas to Everett and Lottie Perdue. She married Alfred E. Dixon, (deceased) on May 26, 1948 in Caney, Kansas and lived continuously in Independence.

Helen attended elementary and intermediate school at Pleasant Hill Rural School. She graduated from Caney High School in 1936. Helen graduated from Coffeyville Jr. College in 1938 and obtained her teaching degree from Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1943. Her teaching career spanned a total of 38 years starting in country schools with 4 years at Caney Center; 6 years at Washington School, Caney, where she served as Principal and 6th grade teacher; and 28 years teaching 4th and 6th grades at Lincoln and Riley schools in Independence. She also spent 5 years working with her husband in accounting/administration at Dixon’s Inc. Heating & Plumbing in Independence.

She was a Life Member, Pittsburg State University Alumni Association; Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS); and PTA. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She volunteered many hours of service with the Montgomery County Election Board.

Helen is survived by her step-son, Gary; two grandsons, Greg, Chris and wife Joanna; and great-granddaughter, Mallory, all of Tulsa, OK; one sister, Zetta Tannahill, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Glenn, and a sister, Anna Mae Kincaid.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m.Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home with the Reverends Jack and Marilyn Gregory, pastors of the First United Methodist Church of Independence, officiating. followed by graveside services for the family at Havana Cemetery, Havana, Kansas. Although the casket has been closed, friends may call at the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel from 12 noon until 8:00 p.m. on Monday.
