Diana Dunn Tindle, age 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 3 at Mercy Hospital. She was a life-long resident of this city. While memory, eyesight and health failed Diana in recent years, her sense of humor and dry wit stayed strong to the end.
Memorial services will be held at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 12. Family and friends are welcome at the Tindle home, 317 South 5th, following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Independence Historical Museum, which may be left in care of the funeral home.
Diana Ellen Dunn was born Sept., 12, 1925, in Independence, Kansas, the daughter of Vance H. and Gracia L. (O'Daniels) Dunn. After graduating from Independence High School in 1943, she was one of eight young women accepted into the United States Cadet Nurse Corps program at William Newton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Winfield, KS. Diana spent the next two and a half years following a strict regimen of study. She graduated and was licensed as a registered nurse in 1946. Nursing was her true calling.
Diana moved to Springfield, Mo following graduation and worked as a pediatric nurse. She met and married Gay Tindle of Pleasant Hope, MO, on January 30, 1949. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard in WW II . The young couple returned to Independence in 1950 when Diana discovered she was going to have twins. Diana returned to nursing in 1955 when she began working for Wm. G. Chappuie, M.D.; Dr. “Bill” was a childhood friend and they worked together over a span of 35 years until her retirement in 1990. Gay Tindle was employed as an electrical engineer with the Universal Atlas Cement Plant until his death in 1970.
Diana was a reader, dog lover, a loyal friend and a wonderful mother. She was a collector of antiques and enjoyed attending auctions. She was an avid gardener in her later years, and a member of the Independence Garden Club. Diana also was known for her quick-witted responses and her sense of humor. You could always count on Diana for a quick comeback. As for Diana’s true joy in life, she simply cherished her children.
Survivors include twin daughters Patricia "Patsy" Tindle Bresee of Independence and Sue “Susie” Tindle Unruh and son-in-law Roger of Milford, KS, a granddaughter, Rachel Lousteau and husband Michael of Brooklyn, NY, a great-granddaughter, Marienne Lousteau, one sister, Carol (Dunn) Dixon of Springfield, MO, numerous nieces, a nephew and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters, Patricia (Dunn) Cornell and Thelma (Rooks) Wright.
