N.K. “ROCKY” LEIKER
N. K. “Rocky” Leiker, 75, of Independence, died Saturday evening at the Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew Catholic Church with the Reverend Andrew Heiman, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until the time of the Rosary on Thursday.
The family has suggested memorial remembrances to St. Andrew Catholic Church or Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Rocky was born March 17, 1936 at Victoria, Kansas, the son of Pius Leiker and Anna (Sander) Leiker. He attended school and graduated from Victoria High School in 1954. He attended and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Geology.
After working in the oil business in Texas for a time, Rocky owned and operated an OTASCO store in Pratt, Kansas for a time. In 1967, Mr. Leiker moved to Independence where he owned and operated the OTASCO store until 1983. Mr. Leiker then began working with property rentals.
He was a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Independence Country Club and the Montgomery County Landlord’s Association.
On September 10, 1954 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville, he was united in marriage to Mary Sue Price. Mrs. Leiker preceded her husband in death on December 9, 2003.
Survivors include: three sons, Robert Kenneth Leiker and his wife Carolyn and children Levi, Andrea York and Emily Lanning of Independence, Jeffrey Allen and wife Jennifer and children Ryan and Allison of Dearing, KS and James Louis Leiker of Neodesha, KS ; a daughter, Anne Elizabeth George and her husband Greg and children Scott and Megan Barrager, Nathaniel George of Arma, KS; two brothers, Robert Leiker of Victoria, KS and Laurian Leiker of Ellis, KS; five sisters, Armella Thompson of Russell, KS, Aquina Rajewski of Vincent, KS, Mary Schmidtberger of Hill City, KS, Ethel Gatschet of Hays, KS and Theresa Haselhorst of Hays, KS.
He was preceded in death by: his parents and two brothers and two sisters, Elmer Leiker, Gilbert Leiker, Rosie Wiesner and Luella Dreiling.
